‘Rafiki’ means ‘friend’ in Swahili and the word embodies the spirit of our organisation, which has been working with Tanzania for more than 20 years. Rafiki’s goals are to assist Tanzania’s health and education services through a variety of medical and education-based projects.

Supporting Tanzania since 2004

Under the banner of the Australia Tanzania Society (ATS), Rafiki is registered as a charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission and as a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) in Tanzania, registered as Rafiki Australia Tanzania.

Rafiki is a 100 per cent volunteer organisation. With no administrative costs, every dollar raised goes back to making life better for people in Tanzania. Our funding comes from a variety of sources, including sponsorship from individuals and companies in Australia and Tanzania, and through our fundraising events in Perth, Australia.

Our achievements

Established a Masters Degree Course in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in collaboration with Rafiki volunteer Surgeons and Tanzania’s National University and Hospital – first two students graduated October 2021

37 surgical camps in Tanzania, 36 by Australian teams with Tanzanian support and 1 wholly Tanzania-led camp

Funded the renovation of the theatre at Sekou Toure Hospital, Mwanza

Shipped and donated 56 containers of second-hand medical equipment

Donated 14 ambulances

Drilled 19 waterwells and constructed 29 double classrooms across schools in Dar es Salaam region

Donated school equipment, desks, computers, books, teaching aids etc

Facilitated 3 professional development teaching courses in Tanzania and 1 in Australia

About Rafiki

In our mission to uplift communities in Tanzania, we are dedicated to achieving the following goals:

  • providing practical plastic reconstructive surgery training;
  • stimulating interest in the importance and scope of reconstructive plastic surgery;
  • capacity building through teaching and training Tanzanian medical professionals working in the field of reconstructive surgery; and
  • donating equipment to hospitals and medical facilities.
  • assisting in the provision of facilities and infrastructure for education at schools and educational facilities;
  • sponsoring underpriviledged school children for a quality education
  • providing menstrual products and education for young girls to support their schooling; and
  • capacity building through training Tanzanian educational professionals.
